Title : EXTREME OFFSHORE WIND SHEAR

Summary :
Positive and negative short-term extreme wind shears distributions (conditioned on the mean wind speed) are determined and compared mutually for a number of offshore sites. The analysis is based on high sampled field measurements (1 - 8 Hz) extracted from "Database on Wind Characteristics" (www.winddata.com). Three different averaging periods (2, 5 and 10 seconds) are considered, and for each averaging period a relation between the resulting extreme shear distributions and the averaging time will be presented. The (short-term) extreme shear analysis will be based on different spatial distances, and the possibilities for extrapolation to spatial distances beyond 100m (corresponding to the next generation of offshore wind turbines) is investigated. Finally, the paper includes a comparison of the analysed short-term values with the analogue 10-minute shear values as well as with the short-term values specified in the IEC-61400 code.
